Custom Chandelier Winch Systems
From suspending art installations to flying tables in modern office spaces, Penny Engineering designs custom winch systems for a wide range of applications, working with you to develop a solution that perfectly addresses your unique requirements.
Our Custom Winch Design Services
Penny Engineering’s experienced design team can work with you to create the ideal multi-rope raising and lowering solution for your premises, assets, and budget. With your own custom winch, you can effortlessly access chandeliers for cleaning and maintenance without the cost and disruption of ladders and scaffolding.
We offer both manually and electrically operated winch equipment, with lifting capacities of up to 2000kg. Control options include wall-mounted push buttons, a flying lead style plug-in remote, or a full radio remote control system. Plus, your custom winch can be seamlessly integrated with home automation systems, such as Crestron or Lutron.
In some cases, our systems may be designed so that no winch parts are visible when in the upper raised position, preserving the appearance of your facility. You also have the option to keep your luminaires energised during the lowering process or to isolate the feed, ensuring the lights remain off until they are fully raised.
Custom Winch Uses
A custom winch system eliminates the need to work at height, making it quick, easy, and safe to access chandeliers and other suspended objects. Applications could include:
- Dome ceiling chandeliers
- Staircase lights
- Atrium roof lights
- Multi function room displays
- Badminton court lighting
- Suspended glass canopies
- Retail signage
- Gallery artwork
- Office flying tables
- Wall Partitions
Whatever your project, our team of designers, project managers, and installers will guide you from concept to completion. We also offer comprehensive inspection and maintenance of your custom winch system to ensure its ongoing safety and compliance with legislation.

Who We Work With
Custom Winch Design FAQs
The lead time for a custom winch is approximately 6 weeks from design approval.
Our bespoke winch designs can be configured in several ways but will typically include the following core components:
- Hoist Assembly: A drum for the rope to feed onto and an electric motor / gearbox that rotates it.
- Contact Suspension Unit (CSU): Connects the electrical circuits and engages a mechanical lock, relieving the winch, pulleys, and wire rope from tension.
- Pulleys: Directs the rope between the hoist assembly and the CSU.
- Cable Reels: Pays out the electrical flex to the light fitting when being lowered and automatically retracts it when being raised.
- Hoist Control Enclosure: An inverter is used to convert the domestic 230v power supply to 3-phase power, which is what the hoist motor uses to run. This is housed in the hoist control enclosure, which all system control circuits feedback to.
We can design and manufacture electrically or manually operated custom winch systems, depending on your requirements.
Electric systems will use mains electricity to move the hoist, controlling the raising and lowering process with the push of a button. Manual systems, on the other hand, will require you to rotate a crank handle. This can be removable or permanently attached to the hoist body.
For both our custom winch systems and off-the-shelf solutions, we use tested and certified wire rope to suspend your objects. The diameter of the rope depends on the weight of your fitting.
No, not at all. When it comes to your custom winch, the system can be located remotely to the main lowering point. This requires a series of pulleys to direct the hoist rope from the hoist location back to the main lowering point.
To specify your custom winch design, we will need to know the weight of the chandelier (plus any accessories), as well as your preferences for the lowering distance, shape and design, control method, load power requirements, and lead time.
Electric systems use mains electricity to move the hoist. This means your chandelier winch is controlled with the push of a button.
Manual systems are used by manually rotating a hand crank or winch handle. The handle can either be permanently attached to the body of the hoist or removable for a tamper-proof option.
