Industrial / High Bay Winch Systems
Eliminate the risk and disruption of working at height with a high bay lighting winch system – designed to make almost any asset that operates at a high level fully accessible for maintenance and enhanced functionality.
Our High Bay Lighting Winch Systems
A high bay lighting winch, also known as an industrial light lowering system, enables staff to quickly, easily, and safely raise and lower suspended fixtures – transforming the task into a 5-minute, hassle-free process. This significantly reduces downtime for businesses that rely on a constant workflow for revenue, while eliminating the risks associated with working at height.
Our customers will also benefit from site assessments before the project is undertaken if required, with a choice between standard models or bespoke configurations. Optional features include increased ingress protection, the ability to accommodate additional circuits, and varying control options:
- Wireless control with a range of up to 100m (recommended)
- Hardwired wall-mounted control system (IP67 rated)
High Bay Light Lowering System Uses
Our self-contained high bay lighting winch systems are commonly used for industrial lighting maintenance. They are also suitable for a wide range of high bay lighting applications – including airports, school halls, sports centres, event spaces and retail premises.
The challenge of accessing objects suspended at height is not limited to lighting fixtures, which is why our customisable high bay lighting winch equipment can be used to raise and lower many types of assets:
- Warehouse and factory lighting
- Artwork
- Signage and banners
- CCTV
- Sensor units
- Speakers
- Climate control systems
- Safety locking device
- Wireless control (optional)
- IP54 ingress protection rated (can increase to IP65)

High Bay Lighting Winch Systems from Penny Engineering
At Penny Engineering, we’re committed to helping customers implement health and safety best practices at their facilities – designing and manufacturing warehouse and factory lighting lifting equipment that is fully compliant with UK regulations and industry standards.
Our high bay lighting winch systems are equipped with a range of features to give you peace of mind that your equipment is safe to use, including automatic secondary support devices and electrical contact plates.
- Automatic Secondary Support Device: Designed to eliminate human error, this feature activates at the high-level rest position. Press the “Up” button until the winch docks and locks. Safety locking jaws will engage, relieving the motor and wire rope from tension and providing the load with a secondary means of support.
- Electrical Contact Plates: Spring-loaded contact plates connect the winch’s upper and lower sections, forming an electrical connection when the suspended object is raised. Lowering the winch for cleaning and maintenance triggers an internal relay to cut off power, which is restored when the winch is raised again.
We also offer worldwide installations with no subcontract labour, project management from initial site assessment through design, manufacture, and installation, and planned maintenance packages customised to your systems’ needs.
CE and ETL Certified for Global Installations
Our high bay lighting winch systems are designed not only for performance and safety in the UK, but also for global compliance. Each unit we manufacture carries both ETL certification and CE certification, demonstrating that our products meet rigorous international safety and quality standards.
By choosing a winch with a recognised CE and ETL certificate, you can simplify approvals, reduce project risks, and be confident your light lowering system is safe for use in diverse environments – from industrial facilities to retail spaces and public buildings. With Penny Engineering, you don’t just get a product – you gain peace of mind.
CE and ETL Certified FAQs
ETL certification is an internationally recognised safety standard issued by Electrical Testing Laboratories (ETL). It confirms that a product has been independently tested for safety, performance, and compliance with strict electrical and mechanical standards, verifying it as safe for consumer use in the USA and other global markets.
ETL and UL certifications both indicate that a product meets strict safety standards. The main difference is who develops those standards. UL (Underwriters Laboratories) creates and tests to its own safety standards. ETL, on the other hand, doesn’t have its own safety standards and instead tests products against those same UL standards.
In short, whether a product is UL-listed or ETL-listed, it has been independently tested and meets the same level of safety and compliance.
CE certification stands for “Conformité Européenne,” meaning “European Conformity.” A CE mark indicates that a product meets EU directives for health, safety, and environmental protection, allowing it to be sold throughout the European Economic Area.
CE and ETL certifications are important because they show a product has been independently tested for safety and compliance. Many countries require these marks before a system can be installed, and they give assurance to facility managers, contractors, and regulators that the lighting winch is both safe to operate and built to consistent, reliable standards.
No, ETL marking is not legally mandatory in the USA for light lowering systems, but it’s often required by retailers, insurance policies, or building codes – especially for products that plug into a power source or pose a safety hazard. An ETL certificate indicates the product meets safety standards and protects responsible entities from liability.
Yes, CE marking is mandatory in the European Economic Area (EEA) for light lowering systems if they fall under the scope of applicable EU directives (such as the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive), as it signals conformity with safety and environmental protection standards.
Industrial Lighting Maintenance FAQs
Criteria for selecting or designing the appropriate high bay light lowering system include weight, lowering distance, shape and design, luminaire requirements, control and operation, and lead time.
We use tested and certified wire rope for our bespoke and self-contained high bay lighting winch systems. The diameter of these will depend on the weight of the suspended item.
In most instances, yes, high bay lighting winch systems need to be located directly above the light fitting. Sometimes, it is possible to position a bespoke industrial lighting winch system remotely to the main lowering point (directly above the light fitting). If required, it could be positioned in a completely different building.
For this, we would use a series of pulleys to direct the hoist rope from the hoist location back to the main lowering point. For more infomation, get in touch to let us know your exact requirements and we can specify the right solution for you.
A fully bespoke industrial light winch system is typically ready to install approximately 2-6 weeks. Our self-contained “off-the-shelf” solutions can be ready to ship in less than a week.
Yes, Penny Engineering’s high bay lighting winch systems hold both a CE certification and an ETL certification, meaning they can be used in both the EU and the USA.
