Supporting Our Community Through Sustainability and Action
At Penny Engineering, we believe that strong communities are built on the everyday actions of people who care. This can be through innovation in our industry or working alongside local volunteers. We are proud to play our part in shaping a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future.
In July, several members of our team joined forces with the Chesterfield Litter Pickers to support a community clean-up in Clowne, Chesterfield. It was a simple, yet powerful reminder of how collective effort can make a real difference to the places where we live and work.
Chesterfield Litter Pickers: Our Local Heroes
Local organiser Lee Brassington leads Chesterfield Litter Pickers, where the team have become an inspiring example of what grassroots action can achieve.
Founded to tackle the growing issue of litter in our streets, parks and public spaces, the group has quickly grown into a huge community movement, with volunteers out daily keeping local areas clear of rubbish and waste.
With a huge Facebook following, the Chesterfield Litter Pickers have built a network of volunteers who give up their time to restore pride in the local environment. Their efforts are not limited to collecting waste; they also promote awareness of recycling, encourage positive community spirit and provide a welcoming space for people to get involved.
Their dedication was recognised in June at Chesterfield FC Community Awards, where Lee Brassington was presented with the Green Champion of the Year award, an honour we at Penny Engineering were proud to sponsor, and which our Chairman Robin Penny was delighted to present to Lee.
Our Commitment to The Community
Being able to support local initiatives such as this reflects who we are as a company. At Penny Engineering, we’re proud of our long-standing ties to Clowne and the wider Chesterfield community and see community involvement as a responsibility as much as a privilege.
In July, we were delighted to offer our yard as a gathering point for everyone to meet, share refreshments, and prepare for the day ahead. By late morning, a huge volume of rubbish and waste had been cleared, leaving the area cleaner and safer.
This kind of involvement goes beyond a one-off event. We are committed to supporting initiatives that improve the lives of people in the local community and those who visit the area, while also enhancing the environment.
In addition to supporting environmental projects, our team also enjoys participating in initiatives that celebrate the history and character of the area. Recently, we worked with Clowne Local History Society to install an over-height heritage signal at the site of the original railway tunnel. This was manufactured in-house using as many original parts as possible. It is a privilege to be involved in projects such as this and Chesterfield Litter Pickers.
Sustainability at the Heart of Penny Engineering
Our support for projects such as Chesterfield Litter Pickers goes hand in hand with our broader commitment to sustainability. As a company, we have been making significant steps towards reducing our environmental impact.
Through investment in greener manufacturing processes, improvements in energy efficiency, and an ongoing focus on corporate responsibility, we are working hard to minimise waste and use resources sustainably. From recycling initiatives within our operations to the development of more sustainable solutions in our sector, we are determined to lead by example.
We understand that sustainability is not just about what happens inside our workshops; it is also about playing an active role in protecting the wider environment, from supporting recycling campaigns to backing groups that give their time to improve local spaces, such as Chesterfield Litter Pickers.
We are also aligned with the SME Climate Hub commitment to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. This pledge underpins how we operate, from reducing our carbon footprint through greener processes to being a responsible employer. For us, sustainability is not only about protecting the environment but also about building a resilient business that supports the community, local hiring, our existing and new workforce.
Why Sustainability and Community Action Matters
The challenges of climate change, waste management and protecting our environment can sometimes feel overwhelming. But initiatives such as Chesterfield Litter Pickers remind us that every positive action counts.
At Penny Engineering, we believe that sustainability must be rooted in collaboration between businesses, volunteers and communities. By working together, we can safeguard the places we call home and ensure that future generations inherit a cleaner, safer and more sustainable world for years to come.
Our team are proud to stand and work alongside groups like Chesterfield Litter Pickers, and we will continue to look for other opportunities to support local initiatives that share our values. Our commitment to sustainability is ongoing, and we see community action as a vital part of that journey.
Finally, a huge thank you from all the team at Penny Engineering to everyone who took part and continues to be actively involved in Chesterfield Litter Picking initiatives. Your dedication is helping to create the kind of environment we all want to live in.
